GLASGOW, Scotland – Track and field action begins this weekend at the 20th Commonwealth Games inside Hampden Park with seven Aggies representing five countries as events will be held from Sunday, July 27 to Saturday, August 2.
The line-up of Texas A&M track and field athletes competing at the Commonwealth Games includes Fabrice Lapierre, long jump (Australia); Shavez Hart, 100m, 200m, 4x100 relay (Bahamas); Kanika Beckles, 200m, 400m (Grenada); Bralon Taplin, 400m, 4x400 relay (Grenada); Dominique Duncan, 200m, 4x100 relay (Nigeria); Janeil Bellille, 400 hurdles, 4x400 relay (Trinidad & Tobago); and Wayne Davis II, 110 hurdles (Trinidad & Tobago).
The first Aggie in competition on Sunday at the track and field venue is Hart, who set a career best of 10.11 seconds to win the Bahamas 100m national title this summer. Hart competes in the last of nine prelims heats for the opening round of the 100m from lane one. Also in the ninth heat are Keston Bledman of Trinidad (10.00) and Brijesh Lawrence of St. Kitts (10.16).
Beckles, who has recorded a 53.65 this season and sports a career best of 51.72, will run from lane two in the fourth heat of six for the 400m prelims. Competitors in the same heat with Beckles include Stephane-Ann McPherson of Jamaica (50.54), Omolara Omotosho of Nigeria (51.82), and Trinidad's Domonique Williams (52.95).
Taplin, who set a 400m career best of 45.18 this season, will have a first round race in the 400m on Monday. Tuesday's action includes qualifying in the long jump for Lapierre along with opening round heats for Davis in the 110 hurdles and Bellille in the 400 hurdles.
Davis improved his A&M school record in the 110 hurdles to 13.20 during his senior campaign while Bellille improved her 400 hurdles career best to 55.41 and also set a PR of 51.83 in the 400 meters in her senior season with the Aggies.
The men's 200 prelims have Hart in action on Wednesday while the women's 200 prelims will include Duncan and Beckles. Relay prelims will be held next Friday with finals contested on Saturday. Bellille and Taplin are scheduled to be in their respective 4x400 relay teams while Duncan and Hart are scheduled for the 4x100 relays.
