COLLEGE STATION, Texas --- The state of Texas record college football crowd of 104,728 for last Saturday's Lamar-Texas A&M game at the redeveloped Kyle Field also included a college football record for students.
According to numbers released by the 12th Man Foundation Ticket Center, a whopping 38,800 student tickets were issued for the Aggies' home opener. Last week's huge student pull shattered the old record of 31,000 student tickets that were issued for the Nebraska-Texas A&M game in 2010.
“The football game experience at Kyle Field is unmatched, and it is fitting that the national student attendance record resides at the Home of the 12th Man,” Texas A&M Director of Athletics Eric Hyman said. “You could definitely feel the energy of the 12th Man last Saturday.”
Added third-year Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin, “It was a great feeling for the players to come out of that tunnel after the (two-hour) rain delay and see the student section still filled with their peers. There is no student section at any football stadium like the 12th Man at Kyle Field.”
Phase I of the $450 million redevelopment of Kyle Field increased the capacity of the Aggies' home from 82,589 to 106,000 in 2014. When Phase II is completed prior to the 2015 season, Kyle Field's capacity will be 102,512. Coming into the 2014, the largest crowd in Kyle Field history was 90,079 from the 2010 Nebraska-Texas A&M contest.
