NASHVILLE, Tennessee – The No. 10 Texas A&M Aggies logged a season-high six goals in a 6-2 win over the Vanderbilt Commodores on Friday evening at Vanderbilt Soccer Complex.
The A&M offense was on the attack all night long, all night. The Maroon and White fired 35 shots for the match, including 21 shots on goal.
Annie Kunz led the Aggie arsenal with two goals. Bianca Brinson chipped in with a career-high three assists. Kelley Monogue and Allie Bailey each notched one goal and two assists. Janae Cousineau and Shea Groom each scored goals in the flurry.
Cousineau broke the scoring seal in the fourth minute. On a corner kick opportunity, Bailey poked the ball out to Monogue at the left corner of the penalty box and she sent the ball goalward, finding the head of Cousineau for the 1-0 lead.
Lightning struck for Vanderbilt in the ninth minute, Simone Charley ripped a shot from 15 yards. A&M keeper Renée McDermott was able to get a mitt on it, but the deflection hit the crossbar popped up in the air and the ensuing bounce picked up backspin and crossed the goal line for the equalizer.
The Maroon and White reclaimed the lead 34 seconds later. Brinson sent a shot in, but Vanderbilt goalkeeper Christiana Ogunsami made the save. Kunz collected the carom and put it in the back of the net to stake the Aggies to a 2-1 advantage.
The Aggies made possessing the ball look easy, like a Sunday morning, to inflate the cushion to 3-1. The Maroon and White connected a series of passes that swelled into double-digits with Karlie Mueller, Monogue and Bailey finishing the string for a goal in the 13th minute. Mueller sent a pass down the center of the pitch, finding Monogue unmarked. Monogue sent a pass to Bailey on the left and she sent it home from 10 yards out.
In the 38th minute, Vanderbilt trimmed the lead to 3-2 when Erin Myers sent a missile into the right upper 90 from 20 yards.
Texas A&M (11-2-1, 5-1-0 SEC) went into the intermission with a one-goal lead despite outshooting Vanderbilt (5-8-1, 0-5-1 SEC) 19-2 in the first half.
In the second half, it was once, twice, three times an Aggie putting goals on the board, pulling away for the four-goal margin.
It was Kunz that Brinson was looking for in the 51st minute. Kunz played a pass to Brinson at the top of the box and continued on her run. Brinson slotted a ball through two defenders to Kunz eight yards out and she sent it to the back of the net for the 4-2 advantage.
The Aggie offense continued its party, karamu, fiesta, in the 54th minute. Bailey controlled the ball on the left flank and sent a pass to Monogue inside the penalty box on the left. Monogue drove a low liner into the bottom right corner for the 5-2 lead.
In the 62nd minute, Groom had the Aggie fans in attendance dancing on the ceiling one last time. Brinson sent a cross in from the right side of the penalty box, finding Bailey eight yards out. Bailey knocked the ball back to Groom at the penalty spot and the senior captain sent it past the keeper for her conference-high 12th goal of the season.
Jordan Day, making her first appearance since suffering an injury in the season opener, took the nightshift in goal for the Aggies, making two saves in the second half. Renée McDermott started the contest, allowing both Vanderbilt goals.
Ogunsami made a career-high 15 saves for the Commodores.
The Aggies return to action on Friday when the Maroon and White host the Auburn Tigers in a 7 pm match at Ellis Field.
TEXAS A&M QUOTES
Head Coach G Guerrieri
On the match: I thought we looked really good in the first quarter of the match and the entire second half. We had some quality goals. If it wasn't for some incredible saves by Christiana Ogunsami, we could have scored in double-digits. I was pleased with the way we created chances and the variety in which we set up the attack. It was good to have Jordan (Day) back out there seeing some action.
On stringing passes together on the attack: It's always a work in progress for us. It's something we always want to try and do better with. There was a strong emphasis on it this week in training. You could really see it pay off in the first 20 minutes and again in the second half.
