Aggies Open Play at ITA Texas Regional Championships

Eight players from the Texas A&M women's tennis team begin competition Thursday at the ITA/USTA Regional Championships, hosted by Baylor University. The event will be held at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco and will run through Monday.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Eight players from the Texas A&M women's tennis team begin competition Thursday at the ITA/USTA Regional Championships, hosted by Baylor University. The event will be held at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco and will run through Monday. 

The regional features some of the top players from across the state, with the winners advancing to face other regional winners across the country at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, Nov. 6-9 in Flushing, N.Y.

Three of A&M's four doubles teams are seeded in the 64-team doubles draw, included top-seeded Ines Deheza and Rachel Pierson. Saska Gavrilovska and Eva Paalma are No. 7, and Rutuja Bhosale and Stafania Hristov are No. 8.

Gavrilovska is the No. 2 seed in the 128-player singles draw, and Pierson and Deheza are No. 4 No. 6, respectively.

The tournament gets started with doubles on Thursday morning with Anna Mamalat and Mason Strickland taking on Ana Sofia Cordero and Agustina Valenzuela of North Texas in the round of 64 at 9 a.m. A&M's other three doubles teams have a first-round bye and will begin play in the round of 32.

In singles, Paalma opens against Yana Erkeeva of SMU and Bhosale faces Maria Cardenas of Houston at 10:15 a.m. In other first-round action, Hristov meets Agustina Serio of UTA and Mamalat takes on Solo Zinko of Rice at 11:45 a.m.

Gavrilovska, Deheza, Pierson and Mason Strickland all received first-round byes.
