COLLEGE STATION – The Texas A&M men's tennis team plays host to the USTA/ITA Texas Regional beginning Saturday at the Mitchell Tennis Center on Texas A&M's west campus. The tournament will play through Tuesday, with winners advancing to the ITA National Indoors in New York in early November.
A quartet of Aggies were named seeds for the regional, led by No. 11 and second-seeded Harrison Adams. No. 15 Shane Vinsant was named the number three seed, followed by seven seed and 46th-ranked Jeremy Efferding. Freshman AJ Catanzariti was the last seeded Aggie at 13.
All four seeded Texas A&M athletes along with sophomore Max Lunkin received a bye through the round of 128. Senior Max Montague advanced to the round of 64 after his first round opponent, Estefan Williams of UTA was forced to withdraw. The second round for the players receiving a bye will begin at noon.
Freshman Jett Cash is slated to face Hendy Adams of Abilene Christian and sophomore Frankie Colunga matches up with Juuso Laitinen, both at 9a.m. Second round action is slated to begin at 10:30 with Catanzariti against Sebastion Erimicioin of UTA and Lunkin against Daniel Echeversy of UTA.
The doubles bracket will begin following the two rounds of singles action. No. 23 Adams and Vinsant, No. 37 Efferding and Szabo and Catanzariti and Lunkin all earned seeds in the doubles tournament, all three received byes through the first round.
The Texas A&M duo of Colunga and Montague are slated to face Marco Bensley and Paul Domanski of Abilene Christian at 3p.m.
The USTA/ITA Regional Championships feature some of the top men's and women's players across the country. Over 8,000 student-athletes from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA, Junior and Community Colleges compete at one of the 85 USTA/ITA Regional Championships held across the country.
