COLLEGE STATION – The Texas A&M men's tennis team advanced six singles and three doubles teams through the first day of the USTA/ITA Texas Regional, Saturday at the Mitchell Tennis Center on Texas A&M's west campus. The tournament will play through Tuesday afternoon, winners will advance to the ITA National Indoors in New York in early November.
Advancing to the singles Round of 32 were No. 11 junior Harrison Adams, No. 15 junior Shane Vinsant, No. 46 senior Jeremy Efferding, freshman AJ Catanzariti, senior Jordan Szabo and sophomore Max Lunkin.
The maroon and white were an impressive 10-3 in singles action on the day. Freshman Jett Cash, sophomore Frankie Colunga and senior Max Montague were eliminated from the main draw in the round of 64 after capturing wins in the round of 128. Colunga and Montague were also defeated in the doubles draw on day one.
A trio of maroon and white clad doubles teams advanced to the round of 16. Catanzariti and Lunkin defeated Juan Cruz-Soria and Alejandro Sanoja of Texas-Pan American. No. 37 Efferding and Szabo dispatched of Jamie Malik and David Warren of Rice, while No. 23 Adams and Vinsant concluded day one action with a win over Hudson Blake and Trey Daniel of TCU.
Consolation play begins Sunday morning at 9 a.m., followed by the main draw round of 32 at 10:30 a.m. Two rounds of doubles play will begin at 3 p.m.
The USTA/ITA Regional Championships feature some of the top men's and women's players across the country. Over 8,000 student-athletes from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA, Junior and Community Colleges compete at one of the 85 USTA/ITA Regional Championships held across the country.
