WACO, Texas –Texas A&M's Ines Deheza and Rachel Pierson have advanced to the semifinals in doubles at the women's ITA/USTA Regional Championships, but the Aggies were eliminated in the singles round of 16 after suffering four losses on the day at Baylor's Hurd Tennis Center.
An A&M doubles team was guaranteed a spot in the semifinals as Deheza and Pierson, the No. 1 seed in the 64-team doubles draw, were pitted against Aggie teammates Rutuja Bhosale and Stefania Hristov in the quarterfinals. Deheza and Pierson won the match, 8-4, and will take on Baylor's Kelley Anderson and Blair Shankle Sunday at 9 a.m.
In singles, Pierson fell, 6-2, 6-0, to Elena Kordelaimi of Houston. Deheza suffered a 6-2, 6-2 setback to Alexis Pereira of TCU, and Anna Mamalat was eliminated after falling to 68th-ranked Despoina Vogasari of Houston, 6-1, 6-1. A&M's Stefania Hristov also had reached the round of 16 but retired trailing 4-3 in the first set against 73rd-ranked Katherine Ip of Rice.
The regional features some of the top players from across the state, with the winners advancing to face other regional winners across the country at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, Nov. 6-9 in Flushing, N.Y.
