COLLEGE STATION – The Texas A&M men's tennis team finished participation at the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Monday afternoon, hosted at the Mitchell Tennis Center on Texas A&M's west campus. Finals are set to be held Tuesday morning; winners will advance to the ITA National Indoors in New York in early November.
Sophomore Frankie Colunga continued to play well throughout Monday, collecting five wins since a loss in the Saturday's second round pushed him to the consolation bracket. The righty defeated Diego Casa of Texas Tech in straight sets to move on to the consolation semifinals.
Facing a 5-1 deficit in a third set super tiebreaker against Trey Daniel of TCU, Colunga stormed back to win 10-8 and claim a spot in the finals. Colunga won the final by default as Jolan Cailleau of Texas Tech was forced to withdraw for team travel purposes.
Both No. 11 Harrison Adams and No. 46 Jeremy Efferding saw their run at the Texas Regional come to an end. Adams was bested in straight sets by No. 106 Adrien Berkowicz, Efferding fell in three sets to No. 5 Soren Hess-Olesen, both of Texas.
The USTA/ITA Regional Championships feature some of the top men's and women's players across the country. Over 8,000 student-athletes from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA, Junior and Community Colleges compete at one of the 85 USTA/ITA Regional Championships held across the country.
