Aggies Thrive on Day One of 2014 Conference Challenge

Texas A&M men's tennis collected 13 wins on day one of the 2014 Conference Challenge at the Mitchell Tennis Center Friday. The Aggies amassed wins over athletes from Texas Tech, Illinois and LSU.

COLLEGE STATION – Texas A&M men's tennis collected 13 wins on day one of the 2014 Conference Challenge at the Mitchell Tennis Center Friday. The Aggies amassed wins over athletes from Texas Tech, Illinois and LSU.

The No. 23 doubles team of Harrison Adams and Shane Vinsant captured a couple marquee wins Friday morning over ranked duos from LSU and Illinois. The A&M duo's day began with an impressive 8-1 win over No. 14 Tam Trinh and Eric Perez, followed by an 8-4 victory over the nation's No. 2 ranked team of Tim Kopinski and Ross Guignon of Illinois.

The maroon and white clad pair of Jeremy Efferding and Jordan Szabo matched Adams and Vinsant's 2-0 morning. The 37th-ranked doubles team bested Guignon and Aleks Vukic of Illinois 8-5, then outlasted Jolan Cailleau and Francisco Zambon of Texas Tech, 8-6.

A&M's third doubles team of AJ Catanzariti and Max Lunkin joined in the winning. Catanzariti and Lunkin defeated Nicholas Melott and Alex Buzelan of Texas Tech in a tiebreaker before doubling up Boris Arias and Simon Freund, of LSU, 8-4.

Freshman Jett Cash and sophomore Frankie Colunga bested Harrison Kennedy and John Michael Busch of LSU 8-6, while senior Max Montague teams with Illinois' Kopinski to defeat Hunter Holman and Evan Nix of Texas Tech. Colunga then partnered with Toshiki Matsuya of Illinois to beat Cash and Montague in the second round of doubles.

Following a break for lunch, the Aggies returned to the court to claim five of nine singles matches in the afternoon session. No. 46 Efferding headlined the session with a three set win over No. 6 Jared Hiltzik of Illinois. No. 15 Vinsant and No. 11 Adams joined Efferding in the win column, besting Cailleau and Arias, respectively.

Rounding out the A&M wins were Szabo over Alex Buzelan of Tech and Lunkin over Harrison Kennedy of LSU . Catanzariti suffered a three-set defeat to Aron Hiltzik of Illinois ad did Cash to John Michael Bush of LSU, Colunga was bested by Illinois' Brian Page and Montague fell to Evan Nix of Tech.
