COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M concludes the fall tennis season this weekend at the talent-laden USTA/ITA National Indoor Collegiate Championships with Ines Deheza and Rachel Pierson representing the Aggies in the 20-team doubles field and Saska Gavrilovska competing in the 32-player singles tournament.
Action gets underway Thursday, Nov. 6 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. Championship matches will be contested Sunday, Nov. 9.
“I'm excited for Saska, Ines and Rachel to get to compete in another elite tournament,” A&M head coach Howard Joffe said. “It should be a great overall experience as I am hopeful they will get some productive matches and get to enjoy New York City at the same time.”
Deheza, a junior, and Pierson, a sophomore transfer from Virginia, are 5-0 this fall and received an automatic berth in the tournament by winning the doubles title at the ITA Texas Regional in October. They open the tournament Thursday at 2 p.m. (CT) against Giuliana Olmos and Gabrielle Smith of USC in the round of 16. The USC duo won the ITA Southwest Regional Championships last month to punch its ticket to the prestigious national tournament. The winner faces a potential quarterfinal match-up against No. 1 seed Beatrice Gumulya and Jessy Rompies of Clemson.
Gavrilovska, No. 34 in the ITA preseason singles rankings, is 4-2 this fall and is one of four players in the tournament to receive an ITA wildcard entry. The sophomore from Serbia faces 85th-ranked Kanika Vaidya of Columbia, the host wildcard entry, in the opening round of 32 on Thursday at 8 a.m. (CT).
The tournament, which features no-ad scoring in both singles and doubles, consists of champions from each of the 12 Division I USTA/ITA Regional Championships, the USTA/ITA National Small College Super Bowl champion, the four semifinalists and consolation winner from the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships as well as at-large and wild card selections made by the ITA and USTA. Additionally, Columbia University, which is serving as the host school for the fourth consecutive year, receives a wild card entry.
All four days of the event will feature a live chat and live scoring with links, draws and further event information available at ITAtennis.com.
