Aggies Advance at National Indoor Championships

Texas A&M posted opening-round, straight-set victories in both singles and doubles today to advance at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships, held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M posted opening-round, straight-set victories in both singles and doubles today to advance at the  USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships, held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.

Aggie sophomore Saska Gavrilovska, No. 34 in the ITA preseason singles rankings, defeated 85th-ranked Kanika Vaidya of Columbia, 7-5, 6-0, to advance to the round of 16 in singles. Gavrilovska faces Florida freshman Brooke Austin, the No. 4 seed in the tournament and the ITA's No. 1 freshman/newcomer in the preseason singles rankings, Friday at 8 a.m. CT.

In doubles, A&M's Ines Deheza and Rachel Pierson jumped out to a 5-2 lead in both sets against Giuliana Olmos and Gabrielle Smith of USC and went on to win the round-of-16 match, 6-4, 6-4. The Aggies now face a quarterfinal match-up against No. 1 seed Beatrice Gumulya and Jessy Rompies of Clemson, Friday at 3 p.m. CT. The Clemson duo survived a 3-6, 7-6 (6), 12-10 thriller against Tina Jiang and Crystal Leung of host Columbia to advance.

The tournament, which features no-ad scoring in both singles and doubles, consists of champions from each of the 12 Division I USTA/ITA Regional Championships, the USTA/ITA National Small College Super Bowl champion, the four semifinalists and consolation winner from the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships as well as at-large and wild card selections made by the ITA and USTA. Additionally, Columbia University, which is serving as the host school for the fourth consecutive year, receives a wild card entry.
