CHICAGO- No. 5 Texas A&M opens the 2014-15 regular season at No. 18 DePaul, taking on the Blue Demons in a rematch of a 2014 Sweet 16 game to open the Maggie Dixon Classic. The game also represents a homecoming for Texas A&M freshman center Khaalia Hillsman and Associate Head Coach Kelly Bond-White, who both hail from Chicago's Whitney Young High School.
The game is broadcast on the Fox Sports GO app, as part of the Big East Digital Network, available free of charge with a login from a participating cable or satellite provider. Dave Bernhard and Patricia Babcock McGraw provide the call for Friday night's game. All three games of the tournament are also available on The Zone 95.1-3 HD, with Bret Dark and David Waxman providing the call on Friday night from McGrath-Phillips Arena.
The Aggies knocked off DePaul 84-65 in the 2014 Sweet 16, but Texas A&M head coach Gary Blair expects a fight from the highly-regarded Blue Demons.
“What makes [this game] tricky is that they've had all summer long to look at the tape of the loss to us in the Sweet 16,” said Texas A&M head coach Gary Blair. “Four of their five starters are back, and we have got to figure out how to beat them again, on their floor.”
This game is the third time in six years the Aggies have opened with a ranked opponent—the Aggies have been ranked themselves each of the past eight years. Texas A&M, who is ranked fifth in both the AP and the USA Today Coaches' polls, have their highest preseason ranking in both polls this season.
Over the last 40 seasons, the Aggies are 27-13 in season openers, and have won eight of their last nine lid-lifters.
After this game, the Aggies stay in the Windy City to face Mountain West foe New Mexico at 4 p.m. on Saturday, with coverage available on Zone HD 95.1-3. The Maggie Dixon Classic concludes on Sunday at 2 p.m. as the Aggies take on UTPA.
