COLLEGE STATION – Texas A&M junior Harrison Adams won Thursday's first round match at the 2014 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships played at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
“Harry has been on the upswing as of late showing a lot of poise and mental toughness today against an opponent who played a high quality match,” Texas A&M men's tennis head coach Steve Denton said. “He then got down a break 2-0 in the second set only to catch fire and reel off six straight.”
The A&M junior bounced back after dropping the opening set in the Empire State to claim a three-set win over No. 22 Leandro Toledo of Minnesota. The win was the fifth straight for the New Braunfels native, three of which have been over top-50 opponents in the ITA fall rankings.
Adams will face the second-seeded and No. 2 Yannick Hanfmann of USC Friday, the winner will advance to the afternoon's round-of-eight match. Hanfmann was one of just three seeded players to advance on day one
“Every match is very tough at this level,” Denton said. “Tomorrow is another great opportunity for Harry. After today's performance I expect Harry to play well.”
The elite competition is slated to take play November 6-9 at the host site of the US Open. As the only tournament on the ITA calendar to showcase elite players from every level of college tennis, the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships serves as the culmination of the fall season.
