Texas A&M Seeking Fourth Straight Bowl Win at AutoZone Liberty Bowl

Texas A&M has accepted a bowl invitation to the AutoZone Liberty Bowl in Memphis, Tenn., and will face off against West Virginia of the Big 12 Conference in the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium on Dec. 29.

Texas A&M has accepted a bowl invitation to the AutoZone Liberty Bowl in Memphis, Tenn., and will face off against West Virginia of the Big 12 Conference in the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium on Dec. 29.

The Aggies (7-5) will be seeking to win a bowl game in four consecutive years for the first time in school history when they take on the Mountaineers (7-5) in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl, which will kick off at 1 p.m. and be televised nationally by ESPN. It's the sixth straight season that Texas A&M will play in a bowl game, which is also a program first. Texas A&M had gone bowling in five straight seasons three times previously (1989-93, 1997-2001 and 2009-13).

“It's a great honor to be selected to play in the Liberty Bowl against a great opponent in West Virginia,” Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin said. “It's a huge opportunity for our team to win a bowl game in four consecutive seasons, which is something we've never done in 119 seasons of football at Texas A&M. I'm excited for our team to get a chance to experience Memphis and I'm sure it will be a popular destination for our fans.”

“We are very pleased to accept the invitation to participate in the Liberty Bowl,” Texas A&M Director of Athletics Eric Hyman said. “It's a great accomplishment and reward for our program. I know it's a big goal for Coach Sumlin and our team to become the first Texas A&M team to win a bowl game in four straight seasons. Memphis is a great destination for the 12th Man and I'm sure our fans will be there to support the team.”

Texas A&M's invitation to the AutoZone Liberty Bowl marks the 36th bowl game in program history, and it will be the second time the Aggies have appeared in the Memphis classic. In the previous appearance, the Southwest Conference tri-champion Aggies dropped a 20-0 decision to USC in 1975. It will be the first meeting between Texas A&M and West Virginia.
