COLLEGE STATION- The No. 8 Texas A&M Equestrian team kicked off the 2014-2015 season with a decisive 18-2 victory over Tennessee Martin at the Hildebrand Equine Complex in College Station.
Just one year removed from a disappointing 2-11 season, the Aggie Equestrian team wanted to start the year off strong. The Aggies dominated both disciplines with a win in all four events, holding UT Martin to one-point performances in both Equitation on the Flat and in Reining.
Texas A&M Head Coach Tana McKay was very pleased with her team's first performance of the year:
“Today was a good start. Our plan was to be aggressive and go hard. Sometimes riding at home you feel a little too comfortable, but we did not take it for granted and stayed focus on the task.”
The Aggies began the day with a 5-0 shutout performance in Equitation over Fences. Texas A&M Junior Marlena Parker earned Most Outstanding Player honors for her 88-point performance. Freshman Kristen Mohr had the event's most lopsided victory, an 84-65 decision over UT Martin's Rachel Crinklaw
The Aggies jumped to a 10-0 lead after another shutout performance, this time in Horsemanship. Most Outstanding Player Carolyn day earned a 74 for the Aggies, the event's highest score. No Aggie scored less than 70 points, while UT Martin did not have a single rider score a 70 or above.
The Aggies allowed UT Martin to score for the first time in Equitation on the flat but still took the event 4-1. Senior Haley Buchmiller earned the Most Outstanding Player award with her 93-point performance. Sophomore Anna Rea had the second best ride of the event, a 91 for the Maroon and White.
The final event of the day, Reining, was the only event that an A&M rider did not earn MOP honors in. Despite this fact, the Aggies took a 4-1 victory, with solid performances by Seniors Laura Sumrall (70.5) and Ashley Dotson (71).
Texas A&M will resume regular season competition in Bartonville, TX for a match against SMU on Saturday, October Fourth.
