BATON ROUGE, Louisiana – The LSU Tigers were unable to sleaux down the Texas A&M seniors as the Aggies posted a 4-1 victory in their first SEC road match of the season at LSU Soccer Stadium on Friday evening.
Texas A&M seniors combined for four goals and three assists in the victory. Shea Groom paced the Aggies with two goals, giving her five in the last two games, 10 on the season and 35 for her career. Kelley Monogue tallied a goal in just 24 minutes of action, the 43rd of her career. Annie Kunz added a goal, her first of the season and the 33rd of her career. Allie Bailey, Bianca Brinson and Meghan Streight added assists among the seniors. Freshman Haley Pounds was the lone non-senior scorer for A&M, logging an assist.
The Aggies drew first true blood in the second minute with Monogue's eighth goal of the season. Monogue controlled the ball at the top of the penalty box and poked a pass to Bailey on the left. Bailey sent a return to Monogue on the give-and-go and the Aggie senior sent a shot in from the penalty for the 1-0 lead.
LSU briefly mustered the eye of the Tiger to knot the match in the third minute. Tori Sample and Jorian Baucom worked the ball to Fernanda Pina at the top of the box. The defense was slow to mark Pina and she launched a shot from 18 yards out and it went inches south of the crossbar for the equalizer.
After play settled down, the teams played on an even keel until the 26th minute. The levee broke with 19:10 remaining in the first half. The attack mirrored the Aggies' first goal of the match. This time on the right side. Kunz poked a ball to Brinson on the flank and Brinson returned the ball back to Kunz inside the penalty box. The Boulder, Colorado native sent the ball into the left side netting from 12 yards for the 2-1 advantage.
LSU would have needed all the king's men to stop the Aggies next goal, in the 29th minute. Pounds sent in a ball from the SEC logo, 25 yards off the end line and 10 yards off the touch line. The offering found Groom 17 yards out and she floated a header over the LSU backline and a leaping Tigers' netminder into the back of the net for the two-goal lead heading into the intermission.
Groom finished frying the beignets in the 54th minute. Streight sent a free kick in from the center circle. The service bounced once and Groom sent it home with her right foot from five yards out for the 4-1 lead.
Texas A&M controlled the flow of play for the match, logging a 20-6 edge in shots and 11-2 advantage in shots on goal.
Renée McDermott went the distance in goal for the Aggies. She was credited with one save, but pounced on numerous crosses to grab the Tigers by their tails. She improved her career record in goal to 11-1-1.
There was banging in the bayou as the squads combined for 34 fouls, including 27 in the second half. LSU amassed 21 fouls for the match, including 18 in the second half. Relatively, the Aggies played like saints with 13 fouls in the contest and four in the second stanza.
The Aggies return to action on Sunday when they travel to Oxford, Mississippi for a 1 pm match against the Ole Miss Rebels.
TEXAS A&M QUOTES
Head Coach G Guerrieri
On the match: I thought this was a good result. We got a lot of good performances from a lot of people. All of are healthy people were able to get some good playing time. We scored some good goals and for the most part we played solid defense. The goal they (LSU) scored was a really good goal, but I'm pleased with the way we responded to that.
On Shea Groom's play the last few games: Shea and Kelley (Monogue) give us great play in the attack. Shea is extremely difficult to handle once she gets in space. She's tough to deal with and she had another great night.
On getting a road win: Anyone will tell you that if you want to be successful in conference play you have to be able to get results on the road. This is a great example of coming into a tough venue and getting a win.
Senior midfielder Shea Groom
On winning on the road: It's a huge deal for us considering we didn't have a road win yet this season. On the road in the SEC is always difficult, so it was great to come out and absolutely dominate. It was a little shaky at the start, but by the end of the game we were able to keep possession in long stretches. Our subs came in and did an awesome job and Renée (McDermott) did an awesome job again in goal. It was a good complete game for us.
On her rolling on offense the last two games: It's coming at a good time. Starting SEC we want to start building on each game. It could really be any of us. Our forward line and our midfielders are relentless and the defense doesn't really know where the attack is coming from a lot of the time. And credit to Meghan (Streight) and Haley (Pounds) for finding me. They both had really good services. If they keep doing that, we should keep scoring.
