LOS ANGELES – Texas A&M's Rutuja Bhosale, Stefania Hristov and Anna Mamalat each posted first-round victories in the 64-player prequalifying draw at the at the 2014 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships before falling in the second round on Saturday.
Hristov opened with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over 124th-ranked Miho Kowase, 6-2, 6-1, before falling to Maeva Razakasoa of Long Beach, 6-4, 6-4. Mamalat, ranked 99th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association preseason singles rankings and a No. 9-16 seed in the 64-player draw defeated Florida's Spencer Liang, 6-1, 6-4 in the first round before falling to Lexi Borr of Boston College, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 in the second round. Bhosale knocked out No. 7 seed and 96th-ranked Cindy Nguyen of Hawaii, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3, in the first round and then fell to Kate Vialle of North Carolina, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, in the second round.
In doubles, the 39th-ranked duo of Bhosale and Mamalat dropped an 8-6 opening-round decision to Virginia's Maci Epstein and Marie Faure in the 16-team prequalifying doubles draw.
A&M's Saska Gavrilovska and sophomore Rachel Pierson, a transfer from the University of Virginia, will play in the qualifying round in both singles and doubles beginning Tuesday, Sept. 30.
The qualifying rounds are comprised of a singles draw of 64 and a doubles draw of 32. Just as with the prequalifying draw, a singles player or doubles tandem must win three consecutive matches to advance into the main draw. Eight spots in the main draw are reserved for singles qualifiers, while the doubles main draw imports four teams from the qualifying round.
Main draw competition will be played Oct. 2-5 at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, California.
Main draw singles semifinalists, main draw doubles finalists and main draw consolation champions receive automatic entry into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, Nov. 6-9 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York.
