Three Aggies Picked in NWSL Draft

The Texas A&M Aggies had three players selected in the 2015 National Women's Soccer League Draft conducted on Friday morning in Philadelphia.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Texas A&M Aggies had three players selected in the 2015 National Women's Soccer League Draft conducted on Friday morning in Philadelphia.

Shea Groom and Meghan Streight had their names called by FC Kansas City in the second round of the draft and Bianca Brinson was chosen by the Boston Breakers in the third round.

Groom was picked by her hometown team with the 12th overall pick. The SEC Offensive Player of the Year, Groom started all 26 matches in 2014, registering 39 points on 16 goals and seven assists. She became the first Aggie to earn All-America First Team and Academic All-America First Team recognition. In her career, Groom played in 84 patches, including 79 starts, notching 107 points on 41 goals and 25 assists. She was a two-time All-America and three-time All-SEC performer.

One day before her wedding, Streight was selected by FC Kansas City with the 16th overall pick. The McKinney, Texas native set an A&M record by starting in all 101 of her games as an Aggie. She earned All-America honors on two occasions and was named all-conference all four years, including All-SEC First Team the last three seasons. She ended her career with 34 points, including 11 goals and 12 assists.

Bianca Brinson was the 24th overall pick in the draft, grabbed by the Breakers with the sixth pick of the third round.  The Austin, Texas native appeared in 97 matches in her career, including 52 starts. She logged 53 career points on 16 goals and 21 assists, including 29 points in 2014 with 10 goals and nine assists. She earned All-SEC First Team and SEC Tournament Most Valuable Player recognition as a senior.

FC Kansas City (12-7-5 – 41 points) is the defending NWSL champion, having bested Seattle Reign FC, 2-1, in last year's championship game. The Breakers (6-16-2 – 20 points) finished eighth in the nine-team league.

The Maroon and White have two other former players currently playing in the NWSL, including Merritt Mathias with the Seattle Reign and Alyssa Mautz with the Chicago Red Stars.

The 2015 NWSL campaign will run from March-September, with teams playing a 20-match regular-season, taking a two-week break during the group stages of the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup in Canada.
