COLLEGE STATION – Former Texas A&M men's tennis All-American Austin Krajicek advanced to the second round of the Australian Open doubles draw Tuesday evening defeating the tournament's third-seeded duo in three sets. The major tournament will run through February 1 at the Melbourne Park in Melbourne, Australia.
“I was not thinking about too much as I was serving for the game,” Krajicek said. “I was just trying to hit my spots. We played pretty solid the whole match so it was very important to make first serves and then go for it from there.”
The Bradenton, Florida native was victorious alongside fellow American Donald Young over third-seeded Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez of Spain. Krajicek and Young bested the Spaniards in three sets with four aces and just one unforced error. Krajicek and Young will face Pablo Cueva of Uruguay and David Marrero of Spain Thursday.
“We play well together because our styles matchup,” Krajicek said after the win. “Donald has great hands is really fast and now that we've played a few tournaments together [Wimbledon and Stockholm] we are starting to click a little more. Looking forward to the next match.”
Krajicek is playing in the Australian Open for the first time in his professional career, entering the week at No. 70 in the ATP doubles rankings.
