PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Following 36 holes of competition at the Sea Best Invitational on Monday, the Texas A&M men's golf team owns a share of ninth place in the team standings.
“We had a tough day,” Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. “The boys are giving it everything they have but we just made too many mistakes to be competitive, especially off the tee. Big numbers have killed us all year and today was the worst yet. We really need a good round tomorrow and that starts with our tee shots. If we keep it in play, I think we have a good plan to attack the course.”
The Aggies (305-300=605, +45) will attempt to climb the leaderboard Tuesday morning at 7 a.m. (CT) when the event resumes on TPC at Sawgrass' Dye's Valley Course with a final 18 holes. North Carolina enters the final round atop the team standings at 24-over par.
One of the biggest bright spots of the day was the play of Aggie freshman Cameron Champ (75-70=145, +5), who returned to action after missing much of the fall with an injury to end the day with a share ninth place individually.
“It was great to have Cam back in the lineup,” Higgins added. “He got off to a shaky start but held it together in the first round. He played really well in the afternoon - 70 was a strong effort.”
