COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Aggie Soccer standout Jordan Day was one of two Texas A&M athletes to earn the 2014 Academic Momentum Award as part of the Scholar Baller program, in conjunction with the National Consortium for Academics and Sports.
Day, and A&M baseball stalwart Tyler Stubblefield were among the 45 recipients of the national award. Day was one of 15 named Second Team Academic Momentum Award recipients.
Top nominations were categorized into three teams of 15 student-athletes based on each student-athlete's academic improvement and the impact each student-athlete's academic performance had on his or her classmates, teammates, academic advisors and professors.
A two-time All-SEC goalkeeper, Day was able to rebound from a rough start in the classroom in order to make her academic standing match that of her athletics career. Her school work reached a crescendo in the Spring of 2014 when she posted a 4.0 grade-point average.
Day's athletic career also reached a climax in 2014 as she returned from a knee injury in time to lead the Aggies to their second consecutive SEC Tournament title with three consecutive shutouts and guide A&M to its first-ever College Cup with heroic performances in back-to-back 2-1 victories over Top 10 squads Notre Dame and Penn State.
Established in 1995, the Scholar Baller movement evolved in response to concerns that the student-athlete's athletics role increasingly superseded the student role. In order to address this issue, the founding members of Scholar Baller developed a groundbreaking program to bridge the gap between education and sport utilizing student-athletes' passion for entertainment and athletics.
