Aggies in 11th after Southern Highlands Opening Round

After 18 holes at the Southern Highlands Golf Club on Monday, the Texas A&M men's golf team sits in 11th place at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters.

LAS VEGAS – After 18 holes at the Southern Highlands Golf Club on Monday, the Texas A&M men's golf team sits in 11th place at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters.

Texas A&M (292) was four-over par during the event's opening round with the Aggies and the rest of the 15-team field returning to the course Tuesday morning attempting to chase down team leader Texas, which turned in a team score of 276 (-12).

“I thought we played pretty well today,” Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. “Everybody fought hard and battled all the way through. It's a very bunched up leaderboard and we're in striking distance of a really good finish.”

Junior Adrià Arnaus turned in a three-under round of 69 on Monday that featured five birdies and left the Barcelona, Spain, native as the highest-ranking Aggie on the individual leaderboard in a tie for eighth place.

“Adrià was fantastic,” Higgins added. “He put together a really solid round and carded a bunch of birdies. He led the way again for us and I'm really happy with him.”

Two additional members of the Aggie lineup hold positions in the top 50 spots of the standings as freshman Andrew Paysse (73, +1) stands tied for 38th and senior Greg Yates (74, +2) holds a share of 50th.

“We played a couple holes poorly today,” Higgins said. “On No. 6 and No. 12 we gave a lot of shots away, but otherwise it was really a solid day. I really like where we're headed and how we look. We've got a couple more days of golf and if we continue to play like this we should be fine.”

Competing as an individual, junior Ben Crancer fired a one-under par 71 Monday to sit in a tie for 16th place.

The tournament continues at 10 a.m. (CT) Tuesday with another 18 holes of competition. Live scoring and results can be found at GolfStat.com.
