COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M junior right-hander Grayson Long was named the SEC Pitcher of the Week, the league announced on Monday.
Long was recognized for an effort that highlighted the talent-laden Houston College Classic, earning Most Outstanding Player accolades along with All-Tournament honors.
The Mont Belvieu, Texas native led the Aggies to a 6-0 win against the No. 8 Houston Cougars at Minute Maid Park with a brilliant 7.0-inning appearance, giving up just three hits with only two leaving the infield. Long allowed just one batter to reach scoring position in his seven innings of work. He registered a career-high 10 strikeouts without issuing a walk.
After a rough outing to start the year, Long is 3-0 in his last three starts. He owns a 0.47 ERA, allowing only 13 hits and three walks while striking out 17 during the stretch.
For his career, Long is 13-4 with a 3.13 ERA, registering 115 strikeouts in 158.0 innings of work.
Long is the second Aggie pitcher to ever earn SEC Pitcher of the Week recognition, the first since Daniel Mengden who garnered the award the 12th week of the 2013 season.
Texas A&M is off to a 16-0 start, the second-best foundation to a year in school annals, trailing only the 26-0 beginning to the 1989 campaign. The Aggies return to action Tuesday with a 6:35 pm contest against the Texas-Pan American Broncs on Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park.
