COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Texas A&M volleyball team will face some of the top collegiate teams in the region during its spring exhibition season, Aggie head coach Laurie Corbelli announced. The schedule includes a home match against Rice at Reed Arena as well as highly competitive one-day tournaments in Houston and Dallas.
The Aggies open their spring schedule Thursday, April 2 as they play host to Rice at Reed Arena. The Owls, coached by Genny (Wood) Volpe, who was a senior during Corbelli's inaugural season at A&M in 1993 and served as an assistant coach on Corbelli's staff from 2001-03, are coming off one of their best seasons in school history, finishing 23-10 in 2014 to tie for the fifth most wins in program history. The match against the Owls is slated to begin at 4 p.m., and admission is free.
On Saturday, April 11, A&M heads to Houston to compete in the F.A.S.T. Complex Collegiate Invitational. Baylor, Houston, Houston Baptist, Louisiana Lafayette, Oklahoma, Rice, Stephen F. Austin, SMU, Sam Houston State, Texas, TCU, UTSA, Texas State and Texas Southern also are scheduled to compete in the tournament to be held at the F.A.S.T. Complex, located at 15400 Hempstead Road in Houston.
The Aggies conclude their spring season Saturday, April 18 at the Lone Star Classic College Showcase at the Dallas Convention Center Arena. Other teams participating in the tournament include Baylor, North Texas, Oklahoma, Texas, TCU, Texas Tech and UTSA.
Corbelli, entering her 23rd season at the helm of the Aggies, returns 11 letterwinners -- including all six starters and the libero -- from last year's team that went 21-9 and advanced to the NCAA tournament for a fourth consecutive year. In addition, she welcomes freshman Kaitlyn Blake, a 6-2 middle blocker from Allen, Texas (Allen High School), who enrolled at A&M in January and will be making her first appearance in the maroon and white.
