Texas A&M starts fast at NCAA Championships

Highlighting the Aggies' first day at the NCAA Women's Swimming & Diving Championships was a third place finish by senior Sarah Henry in the 500-yard freestyle.

GREENSBORO, N.C. --- The Texas A&M women's swimming and diving team got off to a fast start by scoring points in every race of the first day of the 2015 NCAA Championships on Thursday at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

The Aggies, who are seeking their ninth straight top 10 finish at the NCAA meet, closed out the day in fourth place with 82.5 points, trailing only Georgia (172), California (162) and Stanford (111). Rounding out the top 10 in the team standings were Virginia (76), Louisville (76), Wisconsin (54), Tennessee (52), USC (46) and Arizona (44).

Highlighting the Aggies' first day was a third place finish by senior Sarah Henry in the 500-yard freestyle. Henry touched the wall in a season-best 4:34.34, which was just off her school record of 4:33.07 from her sophomore season. Henry was third behind NCAA record holder Leah Smith of Virginia and Cierra Runge of Cal.

The Aggies opened the night with a strong performance in the 200 free relay from the foursome of freshman Béryl Gastaldello, senior Lili Ibanez, freshman Bethany Galat and senior Sammie Bosma. The foursome hit the wall in a season-best 1:27.85, which made them the No. 2 200 free relay in school history.

Texas A&M had a pair of freshmen score points in the 200 IM. Galat won the consolation final in a lifetime-best time of 1:55.48, which pushed her to No. 2 in school history, and Lisa Bratton was right behind in third (11th overall) in a lifetime best 1:56.58 (No. 6 in school history).

The Aggies also scored solid points in the 50 free with Gastaldello taking second in the consolation final of the 50 free (10th overall) and Bosma right behind in 22.12 (t12th overall).

A&M closed out the night with a third-place finish in the consolation final (11th overall) of the 400 medley relay. The foursome of Gastaldello, sophomore Franko Jonker, senior Emily Neubert and Bosma finished in 3:32.99.
