PALM CITY, Fla. – Senior Greg Yates owns the top spot in the individual standings after the opening two rounds of the Valspar Collegiate at Floridian Golf Club while as a team the Aggie men's golf squad ranks seventh.
“Greg was awesome today,” Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. “He made a ton of birdies and was in good control of his ball and himself all day. I'm very impressed by him and how he played.”
In total, Yates (67-67=134, -8) carded 15 birdies on the day to record back-to-back rounds of four-under par and position the Mansfield, Texas, native with a two-shot lead over Thomas Detry of Illinois and Regel Fernandes of South Florida (-6) heading into Tuesday's final round.
Aggie junior Adrià Arnaus (73-71=144, +2) also owns a spot in the top 25 on the leaderboard with a share of 25th after 36 holes.
In the team standings, the Aggies (290-289=579, +11) join the rest of the 13-team field looking up at team leader LSU, which is -15 under par and one shot up on South Florida after two rounds.
“We had such a good opportunity to have a great 36 holes today but we made some really untimely errors,” Higgins added. “We hit the wrong shots at the wrong times and gave away a lot of shots in bunches. That being said, we're ahead of some really good teams and in contention for a strong finish. That part is very positive. Our biggest challenge is trying to put 54 good holes together because we haven't done that very well this year.”
The tournament resumes with a concluding 18 holes on Tuesday morning. The Aggies will be teeing off at 7:57 a.m. (CT) alongside golfers from Georgia Tech and Illinois. Live scoring is available through GolfStat.com.
