COLLEGE STATION – Texas A&M's AJ Catanzariti was named Southeastern Conference freshman of the week, the league office announced Wednesday morning. Catanzariti helped the Aggies to a pair of road conference wins at Mississippi State and Alabama last weekend.
Wednesday's accolades marked the third time this spring a member of the No. 7 Texas A&M men's tennis team was named SEC Freshman of the Week, Catanzariti's doubles partner Arthur Rinderknech earned the title twice in February.
After Catanzariti dropped his first set Friday evening against No. 105 Tassilo Schmid of Mississippi State, the Pittsburgh native won 24 of the next 31 games to defeat Schmid and Stuart Kenyon of Alabama. Friday's win was Catanzariti's first at the four-line for the maroon and white, moving to 2-0 against ranked opponents this spring. With the wins Catanzariti moves to 10-3 in dual matches and 6-1 in SEC play.
Catanzariti and rest of the No. 7 Aggies will return to the George P Mitchell Tennis Center to host a trio of ranked teams this weekend. The brief home stand starts with No. 53 Arkansas Friday at 6 p.m. followed by a doubleheader against No. 13 Ole Miss and No. 74 UTSA Sunday afternoon, at noon and 4 p.m. respectively. Ole Miss' Nik Scholtz was named SEC player of the week.
