COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M's Rutuja Bhosale (pronounced roo-too-ja bo-slay) has been named the SEC Player of the Week for women's tennis, the Southeastern Conference office announced today. It marks the first weekly conference honor bestowed on an A&M player this season.
Bhosale, a sophomore from Shrirampur, India, went 4-0 over the last week to help lead Texas A&M to a 3-1 record, including a 2-1 mark against top-10 teams. All four of her singles wins were in straight sets or less at the No. 4 line, including a 6-3, 6-3 victory over 41st-ranked Belinda Woolcock of Florida as Bhosale extended her singles win streak to a team-high six matches.
Bhosale was 2-1 in doubles matches with partner Saska Gavrilovska, including a come-from-behind 8-5 victory over 31st-ranked Josie Kuhlman and Peggy Porter of Florida as the Gators lost the doubles point for the first time since Feb. 27. The win against the Gator pair marked the highest-ranked win of Bhosale's doubles career.
For the season, Bhosale is 17-9 overall in singles, including a team-leading 9-2 in dual matches, as well as a team-best 6-1 in SEC matches only. In doubles, she and Gavrilovska improved to 8-3 in dual matches and 4-2 in SEC matches only and boast a 3-0 record against nationally ranked opponents.
Bhosale and the No. 15 Aggies (8-4, 5-2 SEC) hit the road this weekend as they head to The Magnolia State to face No. 35 Mississippi State, Friday in Starkville and No. 21 Ole Miss in Oxford on Sunday. The match against the Bulldogs begins at 3 p.m. at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre. The match against the Rebels has been moved up to a noon start at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center.
