COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M's Anna Mamalat has been named the SEC Player of the Week for women's tennis, the Southeastern Conference office announced today. It is the first such honor for the junior from Philadelphia.
Mamalat went 3-0 at No. 6 singles and was instrumental in A&M going 3-0 last week -- all against top-25 teams -- including back-to-back 4-3 upsets against No. 7 Baylor and No. 8 Vanderbilt.
At Baylor, Mamalat overcame deficits in each set against Kelley Anderson, winning four consecutive games for a 7-5 first-set win. In the second set, Mamalat fell behind, 3-0, but fought back to force a tiebreaker in which she scored the final three points to win 7-6 (5) and tie the overall team score at 3-3.
Against No. 8 Vanderbilt, Mamalat put A&M at 3-3 once again after overcoming a 7-6 (5) first-set loss against Ashleigh Antal and winning the next two sets, 6-2, 6-2. Mamalat was first off against No. 21 Kentucky, giving A&M a 1-0 lead after defeating Kate Lanier, 6-1, 6-0.
With the wins, Mamalat extended her career-best winning streak to seven matches and improved to 7-1 in SEC singles matches as well as 9-2 in all dual matches.
Mamalat and the No. 10 Aggies (15-4, 11-2 SEC), who finished in a three-way tie with Georgia and Vanderbilt for second place in the conference standings, head to Columbia, S.C., this week to compete in the 2015 SEC Women's tennis Tournament at the Carolina Tennis Center. Texas A&M is the No. 3 seed and opens tournament play Friday at 2 p.m. (ET) against the winner between No. 6 seed LSU and No. 11 seed Arkansas or No. 14 seed Missouri.
