BIRMINGHAM – A pair of Aggies were selected for weekly honors by the SEC with Kamaria Brown named women's Runner of the Week and Ioannis Kyriazis earning a third Freshman of the Week accolade.
Brown set an outdoor career best in the 400 meters as her 51.76 clocking placed fourth in a star-studded race at Baylor's Michael Johnson Classic this past weekend. Defending NCAA champion Courtney Okolo of Texas won the race in a world-leading 50.99 while Brown's time is currently eighth on the 2015 world list, sixth among Americans, fifth among collegians and second best in the SEC. On the Aggie all-time list Brown's time is the No. 5 performer.
Brown also ran third leg on the 4x100 relay as the Aggies reversed the result against Texas from their last encounter at the Texas Relays when the Longhorns held a 43.70 to 43.72 edge. In Waco, A&M defeated Texas by a margin of 43.61 to 43.91 in securing the victory with a crew that included Jennifer Madu, Ashton Purvis, K. Brown and Aaliyah Brown.
The Aggie women carry a collegiate leading time of 43.03 in the 4x100 heading into the Penn Relays this weekend. Texas A&M has claimed six consecutive 4x100 titles at the Penn Relay Carnival and won six of the past seven 4x200 titles.
Kyriazis established another career best in the javelin as his winning mark of 248-6 (75.74) bettered the field by nearly 30 feet at the Michael Johnson Classic. Kyriazis took only three throws as his best effort came in the third round. He passed on his three remaining attempts as Fabian Dohmann of Texas (218-7) was runner-up in the competition.
Currently third on the 2015 world junior list, Kyriazis ranks fourth among collegians and second in the SEC. Kyriazis is the top collegian among freshmen in the javelin by over 15 feet. He remains No. 3 on the Aggie all-time list.
Texas A&M men and women remain locked into the No. 1 position among the USTFCCCA national team computer rankings as they prepare for their annual trek to Franklin Field for the 121st Penn Relay Carnival, which begins Thursday and runs through Saturday. Another group of Aggies travel to San Marcos for the Bobcat Classic on Saturday.
