Texas A&M's Karis Jochen was selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-District team while teammates Kohl Anderson and Shelbi Vaughan were part of the SEC Community Service team for track and field.
Vaughan also remains among the 10 members of The Bowerman women's watch list that was updated this week following the conference meets held the past two weekends while Deon Lendore was added back to the men's list.
Jochen was one of 11 athletes named to the women's Capital One Academic All-District team for District 7 and she was one of seven athletes who sported a 4.0 grade point average among the district selections. Jochen is now eligible for the Capital One Academic All-America honor as members of the All-District teams go through another round of voting.
One of five sophomores on the Academic All-District team from District 7, Jochen was joined by Kendall Baisden of Texas, Alice Wright of New Mexico, Montana's Reagan Colyer and Stephen F. Austin's Courtney High. The Academic All-District team also included seniors Rebecca Esselstein of Air Force, Carley McCutchen of Montana State, Texas Tech's Montene Speight, New Mexico's Sammy Silva and the Boise State duo of Marisa Howard and Kate Jette.
District 7 includes schools from the following states: Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and Wyoming.
The SEC presents a Community Service team for each of its 21 league-sponsored sports, as it highlights a male and female athlete from each school who gives back to his or her community through superior service efforts.
Anderson and Vaughan both assisted with Aggie CAN, a program that helps collect canned goods to donate to the Brazos Valley food bank, as well as a Christmas fund raiser within the track and field program, where money is donated by team members so they can shop for and deliver gifts to the boys at the Everyday Life Treatment Center in Bryan.
Anderson also served as a Huddle Leader, a camp counselor for FCA sports camp, and was involved with Aggie Move, where student-athletes play with kids at local elementary schools and talk with them about the importance of nutrition.
Vaughan assists with Our Special Aggies, who welcome special needs kids that are part of the Aggie family through their parent and make them honorary Aggies. She also volunteers with Starlight Aggies, who helps seriously ill children and their families cope with their pain, fear and isolation through entertainment, education and family activities. Vaughan assists with Blue Angels at the Bryan police department, Cards for Soldiers, and Preemi Prints, where she helps make blankets and pillows for premature babies.
Offering her time and experience, Vaughan is a volunteer coach at Long Middle School in College Station. She coaches throwing events and helps with all skills and sports, such as volleyball, basketball and weight room, when their track season is over. Vaughan also is involved with Special Olympics and TAAF programs during their track and field competitions.
