Carlson Added to Coaching Staff

Texas A&M added 13-year veteran Jake Carlson to the staff as a volunteer assistant coach, head coach Rob Childress announced on Tuesday.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M added 13-year veteran Jake Carlson to the staff as a volunteer assistant coach, head coach Rob Childress announced on Tuesday.

Carlson will mentor the catchers as well as handling duties pertaining to on-campus recruiting and development of scouting reports.

"We are pleased to welcome Jake and his wife Jessica into the family," Childress said. "He has been at one of the premier junior colleges in the country for the last three seasons. Jake brings with him a wealth of knowledge from the state of Texas. He has great connections throughout the state among coaches and scouts and has a good feel of what is out there."

Carlson arrives at Texas A&M after a three-year stint at Howard College. During the three years, he helped the Hawks to a combined 122-57 mark and a WJCAC title in 2015. He helped mentor nine draft picks, including three players picked in the first six rounds.

"I'm obviously very honored and humbled to join the Texas A&M family," Carlson said. "This is an exciting opportunity for me professional and for my wife, to get her closer to home. I'm very thankful Coach Childress, Coach (Will) Bolt and Coach (Justin) Seely for welcoming me to their staff and I can't wait to get started."

Carlson replaces Austin Morgan, who accepted a job as the top assistant coach at College of Charleston, where he was an all-conference catcher.

"We are very thankful for all that Austin did for us this last year," Childress said. "He and his wife Allisyn were such a big part of the success we enjoyed in 2015. We wish them nothing but the best moving forward as he heads off to a great opportunity to coach at his alma mater."

Carlson's coaching career started at Nicholls State where he served as a volunteer assistant coach in 2004 and he was promoted to a full-time assistant in his second season. After his stint at Nicholls State, Carlson made stops at Coffeyville Community College (2005-07), Odessa College (2007-10) and Blinn College (2010-12). He also served as an associate scout with the Kansas City Royals for five years.

During his career on junior college staffs, over 60 players went on to play at Division I schools. He has coached 35 players that have been selected in the MLB Draft and three All-Americans.

The Manhattan, Kansas native, played his final two seasons of collegiate baseball at Nicholls State. In 2003, Carlson batted .286 (38-for-133) with four doubles, one home run and 20 RBI for the Colonels. He started his career at Butler County Community College, earning all-conference as an outfielder during his sophomore season.

Carlson earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Nicholls State. He married the former Jessica Weynand of Brenham in December 2014.
