TORONTO, Ontario- Texas A&M senior Courtney Williams started in the USA's 75-69 win over Brazil in the women's basketball competition of the Pan American Games at the Ryerson Athletic Centre.
The win moves Team USA to 1-0 in Pool A play, while Brazil drops to 0-1 in Pool A. The United States can clinch a spot in the tournament's semifinals as early as their next game, at 8 p.m. Friday against the Dominican Republic.
Williams had three rebounds, two assists and a point for the game, contributing a strong floor game, handling inbounds plays and playing strong defense.
During the first quarter, she found Notre Dame's Taya Reimer on an inbound play for an assist. She followed that up with a sequence where she forced Brazil into a missed shot, corralled the rebound, brought the ball up court and found a wide-open Moriah Jefferson (Connecticut) for a 3-pointer and assist.
She added a free throw in the fourth quarter after making a strong drive to the hoop off of a spin move. Her two assists were the second-most on the team, trailing only point guard Jefferson, who had three.
Williams and Team USA return to action at 8 p.m. CT on Friday, July 17 against the Dominican Republic. Coverage for the game is slated for ESPN3.
