COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Members of the Texas A&M volleyball team took advantage of their day off from a rigorous training schedule to volunteer at Residence Hall Move-In Assistance Day, welcoming and assisting new and returning Aggies move into their dorms.
The Department of Residence Life developed the assistance day program, and volunteers from the A&M community are on hand all day to help arriving students move into the residence halls. The Sunday the week before classes start is when the majority of students move into the dorms.
Aggie freshman outside hitter Margaret Connett enjoyed spending time during her day off from practice to greet and lend a hand to her fellow classmates who were moving into Texas A&M's newly constructed White Creek Apartments.
"Moving in for me as a freshman a few months ago was really exciting, so I know they have a bunch of emotions and anticipation," said the Woodlands, Texas, native. "Being there to excite them about coming into college at this new time of their life is really cool. It also is really exciting to see the campus get more and more populated, because it has been pretty quiet during the summer. Starting to see a bunch more kids on campus gets me excited for the school year."
Junior setter Kaysie Shebeneck added that the event is good from a team perspective.
"It is actually really great team bonding," Shebeneck said. "It also is a good way to give back to the community because we always have the 12th Man coming to support us, and this is us supporting the 12th Man."
Shebeneck, from Racine, Wis., shrugged off the time when she and several teammates hauled a carload of items to the fourth floor before the new tenant leading the group realized they were in the wrong building.
"That just makes us stronger," Shebeneck explained. "It was a rookie mistake -- they are bound to happen -- and we were just glad we were there to help them."
Connett, Shebeneck and the rest of the Aggie volleyball team return to Reed Arena on Monday for their annual Maroon and White scrimmage. Fans are invited to attend the free scrimmage, which begins at 4 p.m. and will be followed by a meet-and-greet autograph session.
A&M officially opens the season August 28 at No. 2 Stanford. The Aggies also take on Minnesota in Palo Alto, Calif., before making their home season debut against Wichita State on Saturday, Sept. 5 at the Texas A&M Invitational at Reed Arena.
