COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Texas A&M volleyball team held its annual Maroon and White scrimmage today at Reed Arena.

The team began the event by going through approximately 20 minutes of warm-up offensive and defensive drills while A&M head coach Laurie Corbelli commentated for the fans. The 16-member squad was then introduced before the players divided into teams to play two sets.

The Maroon team held a narrow 16-14 lead in the opening set before pulling away to win, 25-18. In the second set, the Maroon team used an 11-0 run to break away from a 13-13 tie en route to a 25-15 victory.

"I loved the fast start," A&M head coach Laurie Corbelli said when asked about her take on the scrimmage. "They went out really focused on high intensity and sharp execution. They had made that a really big goal for themselves, and I thought they followed through with that beautifully. I thought that our attacking, especially from our returners, was on par from everything I was expecting. Usually this early, you see the blocking and the defense being pretty vulnerable and really just making adjustments, so I think it is clear we are on the right path but we have a long way to go there.

"The serving and passing game was strong and consistent, so overall I was really pleased that the team came ready to play and tried to make it like a real match. It was a really fun afternoon of Aggie volleyball."

Senior outside hitter Angela Lowak (New Braunfels, Texas) led all players with 13 kills with only one error for a .523 hitting percentage. Sophomore opposite hitter Ashlie Reasor (San Antonio, Texas) added six kills, and senior middle blocker Shelby Sullivan (Richardson, Texas) and sophomore outside hitter Kiara McGee (San Antonio) added five kills apiece.

All four freshman saw action, with middle blocker/opposite hitter Kaitlyn Blake (Allen, Texas) getting four kills for the White team and also getting in on some blocks.

"I was excited to see the new kids out there; maybe a little bit shaky but out there," Corbelli said. "Blake is so physical with her vertical, and she is a very competitive kid. We have really been switching her position around from middle to right and sometimes left, so I can understand where she is just going to go out and play hard. She maybe shows her areas that need improvement, but she is just a freshman and she is learning every day. She is a very quick learner and she caught some attention out there.

"I also thought the other freshman did a beautiful job. They kept their composure. They did some nice ball handling things and overall it was really good."

In addition to the freshmen, Corbelli returns 11 letterwinners -- including nine with starting experience – and a redshirt player from last year's team that tied for fourth in the Southeastern Conference with a 13-5 league record and finished 21-9 overall and No. 22 in the final national ratings percentage index (RPI) after advancing to the first round of the NCAA tournament.

A&M officially opens the season August 28 at No. 2 Stanford. The Aggies also take on Minnesota in Palo Alto, Calif., before making their home season debut against Wichita State on Saturday, Sept. 5 at the Texas A&M Invitational at Reed Arena.
