COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M middle blocker Jazzmin Babers has been named the SEC Defensive Player of the Week for volleyball, the Southeastern Conference announced today.
Babers earned MVP honors at the Texas A&M Invitational last weekend after leading the Aggies to a 3-0 record and the tournament championship. The redshirt junior from Bowling Green, Ohio, led all players in the tournament with a .507 hitting percentage and 4.71 points per set and was second in the tournament field with 3.67 kills and 1.50 blocks per set.
Babers, who has started every match of her career (66), had back-to-back career-high kill performances, tying her personal best with 19 kills in a 3-1 victory against Abilene Christian while hitting at a .586 clip and then posting 20 kills while hitting .432 in a 3-2 victory over New Mexico State in the tournament championship match. She also tallied 10 blocks against the Aggies of New Mexico State to record the second double-double of her career and finish the match with a match-high and career-high 27 points.
Florida's Rhamat Alhassan and Mackenzie Dagostino were named the SEC offensive player and setter of the week, respectively, and Erica Treiber of Tennessee was named the SEC Freshman of the Week.
Next up for Babers and the 25th-ranked Aggies (4-1) is the Iowa Comfort Suites Challenge, Friday and Saturday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa. A&M opens the tournament Friday at 1:30 p.m. against former Big 12 Conference-foe Iowa State, which was No. 21 in the preseason poll but has since dropped out. A&M also plays Milwaukee on Friday at 6 p.m. and closes out the tournament Saturday at 7 p.m. against the host Hawkeyes.
