Aggie Men’s Golf Tees off Season in Illinois

The Texas A&M men's golf team swings back into action this weekend when it tees off its 2015-16 campaign at the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational.

Olympia Fields, Ill. – The Texas A&M men's golf team swings back into action this weekend when it tees off its 2015-16 campaign at the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational.

"This time of year is always great," Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. "We get to start out at a place that just hosted the U.S. Amateur, on one of best courses in the country, against a great field of teams so we just can't wait to get out there and see what we can do."

Following a Thursday practice round, the event will feature 18 holes per day beginning on Friday and concluding Sunday with competition taking place on Olympia Fields Country Club's North Course which will play at par-70, 7,142 yards. In addition to the most recent U.S. Amateur, Olympia Fields has hosted two U.S. Opens, two PGA Championships, five Western Opens and a U.S. Senior Open among other high-level tournaments.

A loaded field joins the Aggies in Illinois including Alabama, Arizona State, Arkansas, Baylor, Florida State, GRU Augusta, Illinois, Indiana, UNLV, Northwestern, Oklahoma State, Stanford, Texas and Texas Tech.

The Aggies return six letterwinners from last year's squad including veteran upperclassmen AdriĂ  Arnaus, Ben Crancer and Andrew Lister, who Higgins praised their preparation coming into the year.

"I'm really happy with the fact those three guys finished 1, 2, 3 in qualifying because they knew they had to come back and play well," Higgins added. "We brought in some new freshmen who can play, Cameron (Champ) is back healthy so we knew things were going to be a lot more competitive and we were going to be a deeper team. The three older guys knew their jobs were on the line and they had to go earn their spots back and they did. They stepped right up and came in well-prepared and ready to go. They know what we're expecting out of them and they're ready to go show what they can do."

The A&M lineup for this weekend's event features Arnaus, Lister, Crancer, Chandler Phillips and Cameron Champ.
