Olympia Fields, Ill. – The Aggie men's golf team played its first round of the 2015-16 campaign on Friday at the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational, however, thunderstorms over Olympia Fields Country Club prevented the day's final grouping of golfers from finishing their round.
Â
The Texas A&M contingency was able to finish all 18 of its holes during the round with the Aggies standing in a tie for eighth on the leaderboard when competition was halted after a team score of 289 (+9). Florida State tops the 15-team field with a seven-under par showing (273).
Â
"We played OK today," Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. "Not bad, but not great either. Olympia Fields is one of the most difficult and challenging courses we will play. It is a beast and will wear you down if you're not sharp. It tests your skill, patience and ability to manage your game and emotions."
Â
Individually, senior Andrew Lister (70, E) finished his round as the highest-ranking Aggie on the leaderboard, holding a share of 15th place after an even-par showing.
Â
Classmate Adrià Arnaus (72, +2) is just two shots back in a tie for 27th at two-over par while sophomore Cameron Champ (73, +3) was three-over par.
Â
Senior Ben Crancer (75, +5) rounded out the A&M lineup with a five-over par day, while rookie Max Miller (73, +3) played as an individual.
Â
"Today, we faltered in the middle of the round, playing No. 7 & No. 9 poorly," Higgins added. "Other than those two holes, we really did a nice job. There is still a lot of golf left and I liked what I saw out of our team. I think we will get better over the next two rounds."
Â
The tournament's second round will get underway at 9 a.m. on Saturday with the Aggies beginning their turn on the course at No. 10 alongside golfers from GRU Augusta & Texas Tech. Results & live scoring can be found at GolfStat.com.
