NORMAN, Okla. – Andrea Jonama birdied four of her last five holes to post a 4-under 67 and lead the Texas A&M women's golf team in the first round of the Schooner Fall Classic at Belmar Golf Club on Saturday.
"We didn't play poorly but we didn't play great today," said Texas A&M head coach Trelle McCombs. "We started this tournament with the same 3-over score last year, but got better as the tournament went along. We are just getting our feet underneath us and settling into the new season."
"I look for us to have a good next two days," added McCombs. "We got some nerves out of the way today and we'll be back at it tomorrow."
Jonama played the back nine of the par 71 / 5,901 yard course at five under, including birdies on No. 14, 16, 17 and 18 to finish the day in a tie for fourth. Kansas' Yupaporn Kawinpakorn shot an 8-under 63 for the tournament lead.
The Aggies shot a 3-over 287 for the day, sitting in fifth place after the first of the three rounds of the tournament. Oklahoma State leads the tournament with a first round 276 (-8).
Thanya Pattamakijsakul shot an even-par 71 to start the tournament, taking advantage of four birdies on the day to sit in a tie for 12th. Maddie Szeryk shot a 3-over 74, but posted two birdies in the round and sits in 29th. Bianca Fabrizio played the back nine at 1-under, and posted a 4-over 75, which ties for 35th in the tournament.
Emily Campbell and Chloe Velasco both played their first competitive stroke play rounds as a collegian, with Campbell shooting an 8-over 79 (T-51st) and Velasco shooting an 11-over 82 (T-62nd) as an individual.
The Aggies return to action at the Schooner Fall Classic with the second of three rounds starting at 9 a.m. on Sunday. Live scoring is available via BirdieFire here: https://www.birdiefire.com/tournament/14558/ .
