Olympia Fields, Ill. – The Aggie men's golf team wrapped up its first tournament of the fall semester Sunday, finishing in a tie for sixth at the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational.
Â
"Today was kind of a mixed bag," Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. "We got off to a great start and I thought we had a chance to do something special and go really low but when we hit the turn we had some big numbers. That really took the wind out of our sails."
Â
Texas A&M (289-287-288=864) finished the tournament on Olympia Fields Country Club with a team score of 24-over par. Florida State (273-294-279=846, +6), meanwhile, took top team honors, while Oklahoma State, Arizona State, Stanford and Illinois rounded out the top five squads on the 15-team leaderboard.
Â
"All things considered it wasn't a bad showing for our first tournament of the year, especially since most of the teams here had already played," Higgins added. "This was a great field on a great course so to finish in the top half of the standings is a pretty good start. It was a nice learning experience and showed us some things we need to work on to get better."
Â
Individually, senior Andrew Lister (70-76-70=216, +6) notched a top-20 showing, sharing 20th place on the leaderboard after carding his second round of even par at the event on Sunday.
Â
Sophomore Cameron Champ (73-71-73=217, +7) was a shot back in 22nd place, while senior Adria Arnaus (72-71-75=218, +8) and Chandler Phillips (74-73-71=218, +8) shared 27th.
Â
Senior Ben Crancer (75-72-74=221, +11) placed in a tie for 38th, while freshman Max Miller (73-78-74=225, +15) competed as an individual and finished tied for 59th.
Â
"Overall, it was a pretty good team effort with everybody contributing," Higgins said. "I think when one of these guys steps forward as a leader and starts contending for some medalist honors we'll have a chance to be a really strong team. We're going to work on developing that, but overall I'm pretty happy with our first showing and looking forward to the next one."
Â
The Aggies are back in action Sept 26-28 when they travel to Valentine, Neb., to participate in the Jackrabbit hosted by South Dakota State.
