Moorehead Joins Aggies as Wide Receivers Coach

COLLEGE STATION, Texas --- Former NFL Super Bowl Champion wide receiver Aaron Moorehead has joined the Texas A&M football staff and will coach the wide receivers, Aggie head coach Kevin Sumlin announced.
Moorehead, who played five seasons for the Indianapolis Colts, comes to Texas A&M after serving a two-year stint as Frank Beamer's wide receiver coach at Virginia Tech and working on David Shaw's offensive staff at Stanford for two years and under Jim Harbaugh with the Cardinal for one year. During the last five seasons, Moorehead has helped coach five teams to bowl games, including the Rose, Fiesta and Orange Bowls.
Under Moorehead's guidance, Virginia Tech had three wide receivers with 40 or more catches in the same season for the first time in program history in 2013, including Willie Byrn's 51 catches which ranked in a tie for fifth-most in school history. A year later, Moorehead's receiving corps did it again with freshman Isaiah Ford leading the way with 56 catches, which ranked No. 3 in school history. Ford received all-conference mention after setting Virginia Tech freshman records for catches and receiving yards (709).
At Stanford, Moorehead worked with the wide receivers, helping coach a team to three-straight BCS games, including wins in the Orange and Rose Bowls. Under his tutelage, the duo of Doug Baldwin and Ryan Whalen combined for 99 catches for 1,296 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2010, leading to NFL roster spots for both. Additionally, Chris Owusu was picked up by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2012 following his senior season at Stanford and Griff Whalen transitioned from a successful collegiate career at Stanford under Moorehead to an NFL career with the Indianapolis Colts.
Prior to his time at Stanford, he spent the 2009 season as a graduate assistant coach at the University of New Mexico, where he worked with the wide receivers.
Following his collegiate career at Illinois, Moorehead spent five seasons (2003-07) in the NFL with the Indianapolis Colts, including an appearance in Super Bowl XLI when the Colts beat the Chicago Bears. In five seasons with the Colts, Moorehead appeared in 36 games, including one start, catching 31 passes for 330 yards and one touchdown. Moorehead's father, Emery, played 12 seasons (1977-88) in the NFL with the New York Giants, Denver Broncos and Chicago Bears and was part of the Bears Super Bowl-winning team following the 1985 season. The Mooreheads are the only father-son combination to play in, and win a Super Bowl.
A four-year letterwinner at Illinois from 1999-2002, Moorehead caught 85 passes for 1,293 yards and nine touchdowns. He helped lead the Illini to the 2001 Big Ten Championship and a berth in the 2002 Sugar Bowl. He earned his bachelor's degree in sports management in 2003.
A native of Deerfield, Ill., Moorehead attended Deerfield High School where he participated in football, baseball and track, finishing fourth in the state 110-meter high hurdles as a senior.
Terms of Moorehead's contract are pending approval by The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents at a future meeting.
