Aggies Drop 2-0 Decision at Auburn
Oct 11, 2015 | Soccer
AUBURN, Alabama – The No. 17 Texas A&M Aggies fell victim to a pair of Casie Ramsier goals Sunday afternoon and dropped a 2-0 decision against the No. 8 Auburn Tigers at the AU Soccer Complex.
After both squads played stout defense in the first half, Auburn broke the scoring seal in the 49th minute. The play started when Texas A&M defender Karlie Mueller was dropped with an elbow to the head on a late challenge by Kristen Dodson. With Mueller on the ground incapacitated, action was allowed to continue around her and Auburn took advantage of the downed defender, scoring within eight seconds. The Tigers' Hannah Alspach dumped a ball off to Ramsier who launched a missile from 22 yards out, tucking it inside the left post for the ice breaker. Mueller, who had played 1,180 of the Aggies' 1,280 minutes on the season entering the match, exited the contest and would not return.
The Tigers added an insurance goal with 30 minutes remaining in the second half. Dodson served as the catalyst, chipping a ball to Alspach on the right flank. Alspach scampered down the right touchline and sent a ball towards the penalty spot from 18 yards out. Ramsier got her head on the ball and knocked it off the left post and into goal for the brace and her 10th goal of the season.
Holding a 2-0 lead, Auburn was able to throw numbers in the penalty box and quality shots became hard to come by for the Maroon and White. The Aggies were able to get five shots off in the last 10 minutes, but no shots-on-goal.
For the match, Texas A&M owned the edge in shots (13-8) and corner kicks (4-3), but Auburn owned a 3-1 advantage in shots-on-goal.
The defenses prevailed in the first half, keeping the match scoreless with just one shot-on-goal for each squad. Texas A&M owned the advantages in shots (6-4) and corner kicks (2-1).
The Aggies had a pair of solid scoring chances in the first half. In the 10th minute, Janae Cousineau launched a shot from eight yards out on the left, but Tigers' goalkeeper Sarah Le Beau was able to get both paws out to knock the ball past the left post. In the 30th minute, Haley Pounds unleashed fury from 18 yards and the shot went just a few inches north of the crossbar.
The Aggies return to action Friday when they travel to Lexington for a 6:30 pm contest against the Kentucky Wildcats.
TEXAS A&M QUOTES
Head Coach G Guerrieri
On the match: "I'm disappointed in the result by not in the way my young ladies kept their heads and tried to play through the physicality being dealt on them. It is tough enough to play on the road. It becomes that much harder when our captain lay on the ground possibly concussed while play goes on and they immediately score a goal to put you in a hole.
In the end, we needed to come up with some offense and capitalize on the possession and attacks that we had. Auburn's goal producer (Casie Ramsier) produced a couple of goals. We needed that kind of finishing."
