Texas A&M women's golfer Maddie Szeryk competes for Canada at the Spirit International Amateur Golf Championship, held at Whispering Pines Golf Club in Trinity, Texas, a three-day, 54-hole tournament that runs from Oct. 12-15.
Szeryk is joined on Team Canada by Eric Banks, Hugo Bernard and Grace St-Germain. Canada is captained by Robert Ratcliffe. Adria Arnaus of the Aggie men's golf squad, also competes in the Spirit, representing Spain.
Established in 2001, The Spirit International Amateur Golf Championship, played at Whispering Pines Golf Club, is a world class amateur golf event featuring 20 countries from six continents. Each Country is represented by their two best men and two best women players. The 2009 Spirit player field featured 76 National Champions. The Spirit truly showcases the stars of tomorrow; past Spirit Champions include current professional tour stars Lorena Ochoa, Brandt Snedeker, Paula Creamer and Martin Kaymer.
The Spirit is a biennial event alternating years with the World Amateur Team Championships. All 80 participants enjoy an Olympic-like experience including Opening Ceremonies, International Village accommodations, festive dinner parties, Closing Ceremonies and a 72-hole golf event where the world's best amateur golfers compete for gold medals.
