COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M volleyball players Stephanie Aiple (pronounced EYE-plee) and Shelby Sullivan both were honored by the Southeastern Conference today, with Aiple garnering SEC Setter of the Week accolades and Sullivan being name the SEC Offensive Player of the Week after leading the Aggies to three-set sweeps against both Alabama and Mississippi State last week.
Aiple, a sophomore from Round Rock, Texas, averaged 12.67 assists per set and directed the Texas A&M offense to a .420 hitting percentage for the week. In the win against Alabama, Aiple tallied 45 assists -- the most by an A&M player in a three-set match this season -- while directing the A&M offense to a .429 hitting percentage. Aiple herself hit 1.000 as she was 3-for-3 in kill attempts against the Crimson Tide.
In the sweep against Mississippi State, Aiple set the A&M offense to a .410 hitting efficiency, marking the first time since the first two matches of the 2009 season that an Aggie team hit above .400 in back-to-back matches. For the week, Aiple had six kills in eight attempts without an error for a .750 hitting efficiency.
In SEC matches only, Aiple has put A&M atop the league in team assists (13.29) and kills (14.29) per set, and A&M also leads the conference with a .313 hitting efficiency in league matches.
Sullivan was on the receiving end of many of Aiple's sets and recorded back-to-back double-figure kill performances while hitting a combined .462 for the week. The senior middle blocker from Richardson, Texas, averaged a team-leading 4.83 points, 3.67 kills and 1.50 blocks per set over the two matches.
Against Alabama, Sullivan tied for match-high honors with 15 points, posting 12 kills while hitting .526 and tying her season high with six blocks. Against Mississippi State, the team co-captain led all players with 14 points and led the Aggies with 10 kills while hitting .400. She also led A&M with three blocks and tied for team-high honors with two aces in the win against the Bulldogs.
The Aggies (12-6, 5-2 SEC), riding a three-match win streak, return to Reed Arena on Wednesday to play host to LSU. The match, which concludes a three-match homestand, begins at 7 p.m. and will be nationally televised by SEC Network.
