Women’s Tennis to Open Play at All-American Championships

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Several members of the Texas A&M women's tennis team begin competition in the two-day, 64-player prequalifying singles draw at the 2015 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, Saturday at Pepperdine's Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center in Malibu, Calif. The tournament marks the second national championship tournament of the 2015-16 season.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Several members of the Texas A&M women's tennis team begin competition in the two-day, 64-player prequalifying singles draw at the 2015 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, Saturday at Pepperdine's Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center in Malibu, Calif. The tournament marks the second national championship tournament of the 2015-16 season.

A&M senior Stefania Hristov (Iasi, Romania) is first to take to the court as she faces No. 9-16 seed Jessie Aney of North Carolina at 4:15 p.m. (CT). Aggie seniors Anna Mamalat (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Ines Deheza (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) are slated to take the courts at 6 p.m. (CT), with Mamalat taking on No. 9-16 seed Jessica Failla of USC and Deheza meeting Matea Cutura of Pepperdine.
 
"I am excited for Stefania, Ines, and Anna to have the opportunity to compete in one of the premier events in college tennis," A&M first-year head coach Mark Weaver said. "We have had some very good and productive practices in the recent weeks, and I'll will be looking forward to seeing how it all translates against some fierce competition in the ITA All American."
 
Each player must win three rounds to advance to the qualifying draw, to be played Oct. 6-7. A total of eight singles players will advance from the prequalifying round to the qualifying round.
 
A&M junior Rutuja Bhosale (Shrirampur, India ) was selected to play in the qualifying round in singles, and Aggie juniors Saska Gavrilovska (Vrsac, Serbia) and sophomore Rachel Pierson (Princeton, N.J.), were selected to compete in the main draw of singles, which gets underway Oct. 8 at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, California.
 
Texas A&M also will have two teams competing in the main draw of doubles. The fifth-ranked duo of Eva Paalma, a sophomore from Tallinn, Estonia, and Pierson will be in the 32-team field along with Deheza and Hristov.
 
The singles and doubles finals are scheduled for Oct. 11.

Main draw singles semifinalists, main draw doubles finalists and main draw consolation champions receive automatic entry into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, Nov. 12-15 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York.
