Miller Leads Waterville Invitational after Round One

Aggie freshman Max Miller fired a five-under par 67 Thursday as the Texas A&M men's golf team opened play at the Jerry Murray/Waterville Invitational.

Waterville, Ireland – Aggie freshman Max Miller fired a five-under par 67 Thursday as the Texas A&M men's golf team opened play at the Jerry Murray/Waterville Invitational.

As a team, the Aggies (298, +10) stand in third place on the six-team leaderboard trailing Maynooth University [Kildare, Ireland] (289, +1) and UNC Wilmington (296, +8).

"It was a mixed bag out there today," Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. "[Andrew] Lister and [Ben] Crancer played really solid, even par was a good score. With that said, I was surprised that our next best score was five-over. The course is great and this is a fantastic experience, but in the end it's golf, and you have to execute shots to be successful. Tomorrow could be really interesting with high winds and rain. I'm looking forward to seeing how we compete."

Seniors Ben Crancer and Andrew Lister each fired off rounds of 72 to own a share of second place at even par. Meanwhile, freshman Chandler Phillips and senior Adrià Arnaus both recorded rounds of 77 Thursday to sit at five-over par.

Rounding out the A&M lineup, sophomore Connor Black shot a 78 to stand at six-over par for the day.

Miller, playing as an individual, paces the tournament's field of 40 golfers and owns a five-shot lead over a group of six golfers tied for second place. The College Station native's impressive round featured four birdies as well as eagles on the 595-yard fifth hole and 594-yard 18th.

"A lot of great players have competed on this course and for Max to be on top is pretty impressive," Higgins added. "67 is a stellar round, that's pretty obvious when he's the only one under par with a 5-shot lead. I'm very proud of him and excited about his future here at A&M."

The field also featured Aggie individuals Jake Goodman (76) and Andrew Paysse (76), who are each at four-over par.

The tournament resumes on Friday as the Aggies tee-off against UNCW and Notre Dame with results and live scoring updates available HERE.
