Texas A&M Golfers Finish Second in Ireland
Oct 24, 2015 | Men's Golf
Waterville, Ireland – Competition on the Emerald Isle wrapped up Saturday with the Texas A&M men's golf team finishing in second place at the Jerry Murray/Waterville Invitational hosted by Notre Dame.
"This was such a great experience for the boys," Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. "Not only the golf but to learn about another culture in a part of the world from which many of our families descended."
Texas A&M (298-324-294=915) finished the event, which featured extremely difficult conditions of rain and high wind, at 52-over par. Irish University Maynooth, meanwhile, won the team title at 40-over par.
"We played well today," Higgins added. "I think we improved each round, adapted to the course and the style of golf we needed to play. We managed our games better and I think we gained a better understanding of how to control our ball in the wind, how to fight it and work with and against the wind. That's why I think this was such a valuable trip - playing in the extreme conditions will definitely help us in any type of weather - fair or foul."
Sophomore Connor Black (78-78-72=228, +12) and senior Ben Crancer (72-81-75=228, +12) highlighted the individual performances for the Aggies as the duo finished tied for third on the leaderboard. Black turned in his best round of the event Saturday, firing an even par 72.
"Today was a good team effort," Higgins said. "Connor Black had the low final round and he played even better than his 72. Over the last two days, he was as good as anyone on the course. Adrià Arnaus bounced back for a solid 73 and Andrew Lister birdied his last three holes for a 74. Ben Crancer and Chandler Phillips both posted 75 to help us out. For us to be successful, we need more days like this where all five guys are in the mix."
Aggie rookie Max Miller (67-85-79=231, +15), who played in the event as an individual and owned the tournament's best scorecard with an opening-round 67 on Thursday , finished tied for seventh individually.
Senior Andrew Lister (72-86-74=232, +16) notched an 11th place-showing with classmate Adrià Arnaus (77-83-73=233, +17) a shot back in a tie for 12th. Rounding out the Aggie lineup was Chandler Phillips (77-82-75=234, +18) in 16th place.
Joining the field as individuals, sophomore Andrew Paysse (76-80-77=233, +17) and junior Jake Goodman (76-87-78=241, +25) finished in ties for 12th and 31st, respectively.
"We head home tomorrow and start getting ready for San Diego next week," Higgins mentioned. "It's our last event of the fall and I really like how we are improving and gelling as a team."
The Aggie golf team's next action will come Nov. 2-4 when Texas A&M travels to Carlsbad, Calif., to participate in the Gifford Collegiate.
