WACO, Texas – Texas A&M's Saska Gavrilovska has advanced to the semifinals in singles, and the Aggie pair of Rutuja Bhosale and Anna Mamalat has reached the semifinals in doubles at the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships.
The singles semifinals will begin at 10 a.m. Monday at Texas A&M's George P. Mitchell Tennis Center. The doubles semifinal, as well as singles and doubles championship matches also will be contested Monday afternoon at the Mitchell Tennis Center at a time to be determined.
Admission to the tournament is free.
No matches were played on Saturday as Mother Nature won out. The rain continued Sunday, forcing the tournament to be moved to Baylor's Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center for the day. The change of venue did not affect Gavrilovska, who defeated Marie Norris of TCU, 6-3, 7-6 (4) in the round of 16, and then cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over 51st-ranked Lynn Kiro of Texas Tech in the quarterfinals.
Gavrilovska, ranked 31st in the ITA preseason rankings, will face 42nd-ranked and defending champion Despoina Vogasari of Houston, Monday at 10 a.m. Katherine Ip of Rice will take on 48th-ranked Breaunna Addison of Texas in the other semifinal match, with the two winners meeting Monday afternoon in the championship match.
Addison topped A&M's Domenica Gonzalez, 6-2, 6-2, in the quarterfinals to advance. Gonzalez, a freshman from Ecuador, reached the quarterfinals after narrowly topping teammate Bhosale, 4-6, 6-4, 10-8 in the round of 16.
In doubles, Bhosale and Mamalat won their fourth consecutive match, defeating Sarah Dvorak and Sabrina Federici of Texas Tech in the quarterfinals. The Aggie duo will face TCU's Seda Arantekin and Caroline Wegner in the semifinals on Monday afternoon, with the victor taking on the winner between Breaunna Addison and Dani Wagland of Texas and Lynn Kiro and Alexandra Valenstein of Texas Tech in the championship match on Monday at a time to be determined.
Kiro and Valenstein reached the semifinals by defeating A&M's Ines Deheza and Stefania Hristov, 6-4, in the quarterfinals.
"Overall I am delighted by the efforts of our group," A&M head coach Mark Weaver said. "We are steadily improving each day. Saska has had an excellent tournament so far, and beating 51st-ranked Lynn Kiro, 6-0, 6-0 says it all. She will have a great opportunity tomorrow against the defending champion Vogasari.
"The three doubles teams that we put together also did very well, and Anna and Rutuja are now one round away from the finals."
The singles and doubles champions advance to face other regional winners across the country at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, Nov. 12-15, in Flushing, N.Y.
