NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. --- Texas A&M sophomore Myles Garrett was named a quarter-finalist for the Lott IMPACT Trophy and he is also a candidate for the award's weekly honor for his defensive performance against Ole Miss last Saturday.
Garrett, a defensive end from Arlington, Texas, was one of 22 student-athletes honored by the Lott IMPACT Trophy, which is named for NFL Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott and annually honors college football's "defensive best in character and performance." The quarter-finalists "represent the qualities embodied by Lott – integrity, maturity, performance, academics, community and tenacity."
Garrett has been one of the nation's most disruptive defenders in 2015. He ranks in the top five nationally in quarterback sacks (8.5 for a loss of 49 yards), tackles for loss (13.5 for a loss of 74 yards) and forced fumbles (4). He is the Aggies' top tackler on the defensive front four with 37 tackles, including 25 solo stops. In addition, Garrett has also filled his stat line with seven QB hurries, two batted down passes, a blocked punt and an interception.
Garrett is a Week 8 candidate for the Lott IMPACT Trophy Player of the Week award after making his first career interception and contributing seven tackles and forced fumble against the Rebels on Saturday. Other nominees for Week 8 Player of the Week honors are Jeremy Cash of Duke, Su'a Cravens of USC, Blake Martinez of Stanford, Tyler Matakevich of Temple, Reggie Ragland of Alabama and Eric Striker of Oklahoma. Fans can vote for the weekly winner by going to LottIMPACTtrophy.org/vote.
Additionally, the Ted Hendricks Foundation of Chicago, Ill., announced that Garrett was a member of the Midseason Watch List for the Hendricks Award, which is given annually to college football's top defensive end.
