Aggies pile up 27 wins in Houston
HOUSTON, Texas – Texas A&M sophomore Arthur Rinderknech strung together six wins at the USTA/ITA Texas Regional in Houston, Texas to claim the singles championship Tuesday afternoon at Rice's George R. Brown Tennis Center.
Rinderknech earned a first-round bye after being named the fourth-seed in the singles bracket. The stringy sophomore defeated Jake Rother (UTSA), Yates Johnson (SMU), Tommy Mylnikov (Texas Tech) and Adam Gustafson (Rice) in his first four matches in the Bayou City. As the Paris native moved on into the semifinals a pair of Mustangs were all that stood between him and the single's crown. Rinderknech bested Nate Lammons and Hunter Johnson to cap off an impressive week of play winning every set en route to the title.
With the championship, Rinderknech qualified to play at the 2015 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, NY from Nov. 12-15, 2015. As the only tournament on the ITA calendar to showcase elite players from every level of college tennis, the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships serves as the culmination of the fall season. Hosted by Columbia University, this prestigious event features a 32-player singles draw and a 20-team doubles draw for men and women.
Gaining automatic entry into the tournament are champions from the USTA/ITA Division I Regional Championships held across the country over the last week, winners of the USTA/ITA National Small College Super Bowl, and the consolation champions, doubles finalists, men's singles quarterfinalists and women's singles semifinalists from the ITA Men's and Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships.
Senior Shane Vinsant partnered with Rinderknech to compete in the final of the doubles draw Tuesday morning. The maroon and white duo claimed four wins before falling to No. 3 Felipe Soares and Hugo Dojas of Texas Tech.
Every Aggie that competed in Houston picked up at least one win as the Steve Denton coached squad claimed 27 wins on the week. A&M had a pair in the singles quarterfinals and four doubles teams reach the round of 16.
